Privacy Policy

Last updated: November 2024

At CANSKAN, we believe in complete transparency about how we handle your data. This policy explains what information we collect, how we use it, and — most importantly — how you can control or delete it at any time.

1. Information We Collect

We only collect information you choose to provide. Here's what we may collect:

Required Information

  • Email address — Used to generate your unique QR code and send important updates

Optional Information

You may choose to share additional details to personalize your experience:

  • Name (first and last) — For personalized communications
  • Birthday — For potential birthday perks and age-appropriate features
  • Address (street, city, state, postal code, country) — For location-relevant features
  • Employment (job title, company) — For professional networking features

Automatically Generated

  • MD5 hash of your email — Creates your unique, privacy-preserving QR code identifier (what's MD5?)
  • QR code scan data — When and where your QR code is scanned (for event check-ins)

2. How We Use Your Information

Your information is used to:

  • Generate your unique QR code and profile URL
  • Facilitate event check-ins and identity verification
  • Send your QR code and important service updates
  • Personalize your experience (if you provided optional information)
  • Improve our services based on aggregated, anonymized usage patterns

3. Information Sharing

We do not sell your personal information. We may share limited information with:

  • Event organizers — Only verification status when you check in to their events
  • Service providers — Who help us operate our platform (under strict confidentiality agreements)
  • Legal authorities — Only when required by law

4. Data Security

We protect your information using:

  • Email hashing (MD5) for QR code generation — your raw email is never exposed in your QR code
  • Secure HTTPS transmission for all data
  • Access controls and authentication for internal systems
  • Regular security reviews and updates

5. Data Retention & Deletion

Our Commitment to Transparency

Unlike many companies that "soft delete" accounts (keeping your data hidden but still stored for "historical reasons"), we permanently delete everything. When you request deletion, we perform a hard delete — no backups, no archives, no exceptions.

  • Your data is retained only as long as you maintain an active profile
  • You can request deletion at any time
  • Upon confirmed deletion, we permanently remove: your email, personal details, QR code, and profile URL

What we retain

For event organizers and verification purposes, we retain:

  • Information you agreed to share with companies or organizers during event check-ins
  • Event check-in history (date, time, event name)
  • QR code verification logs

When you check in to an event and consent to share your information with the organizer, that data belongs to them and cannot be deleted from their records through our platform. You may contact the event organizer directly to request deletion of data you shared with them.

6. Your Rights

You have the right to:

  • Access — Request a copy of your personal information
  • Correction — Update or correct inaccurate information
  • Deletion — Permanently delete all your data
  • Portability — Receive your data in a portable format
  • Opt-out — Unsubscribe from marketing communications

7. Cookies & Tracking

We use minimal, essential cookies to keep you logged in and remember your preferences. We do not use third-party tracking cookies or sell data to advertisers.

8. Changes to This Policy

We may update this policy from time to time. When we make significant changes, we'll notify you by email or through a notice on our website. We encourage you to review this policy periodically.
